Applied AI · Contract search automation

How I use AI to find and assess UK contract opportunities

A daily research workflow helps me find relevant roles sooner, remove noise and concentrate my time on opportunities that genuinely fit. AI assists with the research and analysis; I retain control of every application and conversation.

The problem

Contract opportunities are fragmented and time-sensitive

Relevant roles can appear across recruiters, job boards and specialist sites. The same advert may be reposted several times, important details may be missing and an apparently suitable result may already be closed.

A broad alert can create plenty of activity without improving the chance of finding good work. I wanted a repeatable process that could apply my actual commercial rules, compare each role with my CV and show me where a fast response was worthwhile.

The workflow

Six stages from discovery to a decision-ready shortlist

  1. 01

    Search recent opportunities

Look for newly posted or meaningfully reposted UK contracts across relevant sources, favouring the last 48 hours before widening the search window.

  2. 02

    Apply practical filters

Evaluate rate, IR35 status, location, on-site expectations, duration and any mandatory security clearance before spending time on detailed matching.

  3. 03

    Verify the original advert

Open the source page and confirm that the role is still accepting applications. Closed, expired, duplicated and unverifiable results are removed.

  4. 04

Compare the role with my experience

Assess the specification against my full CV, including .NET, Azure, SQL, technical leadership, public-sector delivery, modernisation and applied AI work.

  5. 05

    Rank fit and expose gaps

Produce a fit score, strongest evidence, material gaps and a recommended action. A high rate does not conceal a mandatory product or clearance gap.

  6. 06

    Review the shortlist myself

Receive a concise daily summary, then decide whether to tailor an application, speak to the recruiter or ignore the opportunity.

Current decision rules

The workflow reflects the work I actually want

The rules can change with the market, availability and the strength of a particular engagement. They currently prioritise:

  • Lead and senior .NET, C#, ASP.NET Core, Azure and SQL contracts
  • AI, Azure OpenAI, agent, integration and solution-architecture work
  • Public-sector, NHS, regulated-industry and legacy-modernisation delivery
  • Remote work or practical hybrid travel from the North West
  • Rates around £500+ per day outside IR35 or £600+ inside IR35
  • Roles that accept clearance eligibility rather than demanding active SC or DV

Responsible boundaries

What the automation does—and what it deliberately does not do

AI assists with

  • Research and consolidation
  • Applying consistent filtering rules
  • Comparing specifications with documented experience
  • Summarising evidence and material gaps
  • Prioritising time-sensitive opportunities

I remain responsible for

  • Checking the final interpretation
  • Deciding whether the role is genuinely desirable
  • Tailoring truthful application material
  • Submitting every application
  • Contacting and speaking with recruiters

The workflow does not automatically apply for roles, upload my CV, subscribe to alerts or contact recruiters. This avoids low-quality application spam and keeps professional communication intentional.

Why this matters beyond contracting

The same pattern applies to many business workflows

This is not simply a job-search trick. It is an example of AI being used inside a controlled research and decision-support process. The model is most useful when it has explicit rules, trusted evidence and a clear point where a person takes over.

Sales opportunities

Monitor new opportunities, qualify them against commercial rules and route the strongest leads.

Supplier monitoring

Track important changes, verify source information and highlight material risks.

Document triage

Classify incoming material, extract structured facts and escalate exceptions for review.

Compliance updates

Monitor defined sources and produce evidence-linked summaries for responsible owners.

The result

AI makes the search more consistent—not less human

The workflow reduces repetitive checking, helps surface new roles quickly and makes the reasons for pursuing or rejecting an opportunity explicit. Its value comes from combining automation with verification and human judgement.

It also gives me a useful production example of agentic research, structured evaluation and scheduled delivery built around a real commercial objective.
